Hi Janet,
 
The ringbarking will eventually kill the tree if complete or part of the tree that is supplied by the section of bark missing if extensive. Suggest netting the tree with bird wire or chicken wire or other material if you want to save the tree or branch. They may use the wire as a perch and chew along the top of it.
