A propos of evolved behaviour of hollow-nesters,
this discussion reminds of a wonderful viewing a COG outing had many years
ago of Sacred Kingfisher attempting to open an entrance to a hollow which had
been plugged with the resin-like material that sometimes closes holes.
He/she (?) flew repeatedly, from about 50m away, directly at the hole hitting it
bill-first with a loud "thunk". The attack was clearly chipping away at
the hole but we did not witness whether the bird ultimately
succeeded.
