An interesting note on the Yellow-rumped
Thornbills nest building. Many, many years ago as a young bloke, and when the
late Steve Marchant was running the nest record scheme, several of the local
young up and comers were actively involved in the scheme and I clearly recall
having Y-r T’bills on eggs on June 15, a date I remember as it was my
father’s birthday. As with Barbara I have also recently had begging juvenile
Sulphur-crested Cockatoos in a neighbour’s tree. It won’t be long
now before the local magpies and Australian Ravens are also nesting. The local
magpies are presently participating in territorial aerial combat, sorting out
the territory boundaries as are the Pied Currawongs.

late breeding
Saw two pairs of Yellow-rumped Thornbills
nest-building this afternoon – one in the grounds of St Matthews, Page;
the other at Hawker ovals. A third pair at the Pinnacle NR were doing the same
last week. A dependent Red Wattlebird was being fed by a parent, also in the
grounds of St Matthews, while a pair of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos was still
feeding one young in my GBS. This last named family group has been heard around
the suburb for about a month and for the last two years there have been
late-breeding cockies in this area – the same pair, I wonder, whose first
nests regularly fail? b
