In my view this issue ought to be a priority for COG and I'd be happy to help with/co-ordinate a more systematic survey next year.  Having helped with the surveys in the 1980s and having seen the numbers migrating through then (as well as over my house in the late 1970s) we should be very concerned - hopefully there's no Passenger Pigeon analogy here!!
