Durras Lake has risen a metre or so following
recent rainfalls totalling 320mm. Exposed banks have again become
navigable so I paddled the Lake on the Canberra Day weekend. On
the outward journey I was rewarded with my first Osprey sighting since 19 March
2009. This was in much the same location as recorded during the February
2009 COG trip. On the return journey I had a brief glimpse what I
thought was an Osprey harassing a White-bellied Sea Eagle but wasn't completely
confident with that identification. I also wondered, would an Osprey
bother harassing a Sea Eagle? About 5 mins later close to the place
of the original sighting I noticed something silver
flash about halfway up a gumtree within sight of the boat ramp - and there
was an Osprey, its left foot clamped on a still struggling fish. I
knew it couldn't be the bird I had seen shortly before, so the question was,
were there two Ospreys in the region? I got
my answer last weekend when I was able to see two birds, I think a male and a
female, perched in two trees about 100 metres apart and about 1k upstream from
the boat ramp on the southern side of the lake.
Nice to see them back again (if indeed they have
been absent).
Cheers
