Hi Chris,
I had one with an end entrance and no perch years ago in the diagonally
opposite side of the house where it is much higher and too difficult check
the wire etc and I took it down after a couple of years. It was partly
successful i e they did use it at least once but I kept on adding more at the
back when there appeared to be competition for a hollow on the north side. It
was a much larger diameter hollow and I think they prefer a smaller one. I
think the most important thing is visibility of the entrance from a nearby
tree.
