I finally got to see four of the Black Tailed Native Hens which others have
been reporting at Kelly's Swamp. They were actually present between 1230 and
1300. Lots of Purple Swamphens and Eurasian Coot. I only saw one Black Winged
Stilt but the other may have been around.
Also Dusky Moorhen, Hoary headed Grebe, Black Swan, Pacific Black Duck, Little
Grassbird, Grey teal, Australian Magpie, Blackbird, Sparrow, Super Fairy Wren,
New Holland Honeyeater, Grey Fantail.
The swarms of finches were absent today.
The frogs I was talking about are calling very close to the Cygnus hide. Their
call is a quite loud and rapid "Tock-tock-tock-tock" (yes, I counted :) with a
long gap before calling again. The call starts louder and gets a little softer
toward the end, with a small variation in pitch. There was also an Australian
Reed Warbler in a bush at the water's edge just to the left of the hide.
Very few birds on the Sewerage ponds close to Dairy Rd; the coot seemed to have
moved to Kelly's swamp today.
