Prue and I watched these dams on Wednesday night without
success, although 20+ Common Bronzewings came in to drink. Tonight
Alastair Smith and I staked out a dam on the eastern side of Mt Ainslie that
has also been a drinking site for Glossies in the past. 2 birds appeared at
about 1835hrs, and hung around without drinking. We moved further from the dam,
thinking our presence may have been disturbing them, but we needn’t have
worried. The original 2 were joined by 8 more birds at about 1855hrs, these
quickly went down to drink, and then settled in large trees near the dam, apparently
to roost. Needless to say, we were well pleased with this result!
To get to this dam park in the carpark in Kellaway St near the
end of Phillip Ave in Hackett, then head straight uphill on the management track
that runs east. After 15 minutes or so of steady climbing you reach a crossroad
at the top of the hill, go straight ahead, downhill. The track swings south soon
after and winds around a bit, maybe 200 metres along here you should see the
dam on the left about 100 metres off the track, with some old stockyards and
fences nearby.
Also at or near the dam were a few bronzewings, plenty of Grey
Roos, at least 4 Swamp Wallabies and an Echidna. I also saw a Red-necked
Wallaby on the walk in, first I can recall seeing on Ainslie-Majura although
there is a healthy population just to the north in Gooroo and Mulligan’s
Flat. Thanks to Nicki for the alert.
cheers
Steve

Subject: [canberrabirds] Glossy Black Cockatoos
Sunday
evening, a couple of Glossy Black Cockatoos were seen flying south from the
lower dam in Majura Nature Park where they have been observed previously. This
dam is found by following the track eastwards from the carpark near corner of
Mackenzie and Grayson Sts in Hackett.
