Thank you to everyone who replied/commented.  The photo was taken in early October 2007 in a park in Alexandria, Egypt, right beside the sea on the north coast.  The bird was feeding on insects in low bushes, flying out and taking them from the air and from the ground.  It allowed us to get fairly close and was not spooked by our presence.  It acted like a flycatcher but I cannot remember whether or not it flicked its tail.  I agree that it looks similar to the Familiar Chat being about the same size and similar colour.  Consensus so far seems to favour Common Redstart but I am happy to keep the discussion going.
