I've been trying to get some photos of the Great Crested Grebe as a bit of a project given we only have one pic in the COG gallery. Following Harvey's sighting I didn't find it at all on Sat ~9am, but today about 11am found it just as I was giving up; right where Harvey first described it.  I haven't seen one before and noted that some people say they are quite shy while most suggest that they are not wary of humans (northern hemisphere reports).  But it was on to me at 120m (kayak) and dived whenever I moved so I shipped paddle and let the breeze carry me at an excruciatingly slow pace aiming towards a point to one side of the grebe.

At 60m (measured from the camera) it took to the air and flew off to the middle of the lake. So I didn't get the photos I hoped for. But I did get one photo of it flying at take-off which makes this a bit of a rare-ish photo - I believe they are seldom seen in the air.

The large size photo is a bit big for this list ...

Interesting is that you can see its lobed feet reasonably well, something that you really don't see often since they are almost never out of the water.

There was a Great Crested Grebe on Acacia Inlet when I drove past this morning at 8.20. Full breeding plumage and close to shore - it was about half way between where the pontoon used to be and the reeds at the head of the inlet.
