Thanks John.  Coming into colour, I think there are usually a few blue tips along with the emerging black.  This is a local bird from earlier this week.  G

Thanks for the wren pics, that's more like what I'm used to seeing afield whereas the depiction in Simpson & Day is basically a "clean-plumaged" brown bird with distinct black splotches.
