While on the topic of moulting male SFWs, here's another photo of one, and a second photo that shows a comparison between an astoundingly neat super-alpha male, and an equally astoundingly scrappy sub-beta male.  They are worlds apart in appearance although in the same breeding group from my observations, and when photographed were only a few metres apart, each keeping an eye on the other.

Thanks for the wren pics, that's more like what I'm used to seeing afield whereas the depiction in Simpson & Day is basically a "clean-plumaged" brown bird with distinct black splotches.
