At 4.00 am that would be a bit early for a currawong, wouldn’t it? It’s still pitch dark. My wife heard it then, I was asleep. I heard it earlier in the evening (Tuesday 29th). It was one of the more frantic calls then. Didn’t sound like a currawong at all, and it was just a one-off call each time. And it hasn’t been heard since – probably frozen to death! But I think we both heard it enough last season not to be fooled. However, it would be reassuring to hear it again.

At the risk of being a wet-blanket, currawongs often mimic calls - could this koel call come from them?
