I don’t want to sound carping about this, but there are ‘migrants’ that completely leave the area and other ‘migrants’ whose movements are variable and are quite likely to overwinter, eg N Friarbirds.  The call of the FTC can regularly be heard during winter in the Canberra area (heard one 2 weeks ago), unlike the Pallid Cuckoo for example.

The Boxvale Track (At Welby, near Mittagong - on the edge of the Nattai Valley) was very active with birds on Saturday, but the one which surprised me was the Fan-tailed Cuckoo calling actively in the late afternoon.

As a migrant species, I was surprised to find it here on 5 July 2008.

COG listers are reporting breeding of Thornbills - they have to get in early before the Cuckoos return. But this Cuckoo has either returned early (or so it seems to me), or did not go away at all.

Cheers
