I don’t want to sound carping about this, but there are ‘migrants’
that completely leave the area and other ‘migrants’ whose movements
are variable and are quite likely to overwinter, eg N Friarbirds. The call
of the FTC can regularly be heard during winter in the Canberra area (heard one
2 weeks ago), unlike the Pallid Cuckoo for example.

The
Boxvale Track (At Welby, near Mittagong - on the edge of the Nattai
Valley) was very active with birds on Saturday, but the one which
surprised me was the Fan-tailed Cuckoo calling actively in the late afternoon.
As
a migrant species, I was surprised to find it here on 5 July 2008.
COG
listers are reporting breeding of Thornbills - they have to get in early before
the Cuckoos return. But this Cuckoo has either returned early (or so it seems
to me), or did not go away at all.
