Yesterday afternoon I headed out to Angle Crossing looking for the
heathwrens reported by John Leonard. In between the sound of trail bikes I
heard what I think were 2 birds calling from the scree slope above the
crossing. Despite spending ages peering through my binos they didn't show.
Each bird only called twice for the whole time I was there. It seemed to be
the same or similar call I heard last week at Googong. Other birds of
interest here were BROWN TREECREEPERS and a WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE perched
beside a large, empty? eerie.
Driving on I stopped to watch a huge MFF in the old Ingledene Forest. Among
them were a male HOODED ROBIN, a dozen DIAMOND FIRETAILS, over 8 FLAME
ROBINS and many thornbills and pipits. Nearby were also LITTLE RAVENS and
SCARLET ROBINS. I then headed south along Smiths Road which is actually in
NSW. This road eventually comes to an abrupt halt high above the
Murrumbidgee River gorge in the foothills of the Clear Range near Mt
Yarrara. However, it was overcast and there weren't many birds present
apart from several SUPERB LYREBIRDS calling. The whole area looks worth
another visit in the future though.
Cheers
