I have a little volume by (1945) Alexander McTaggart, first
officer to undertake plant introduction for the Commonwealth of Australia.
In it he says that the original of all Weeping willows found throughout the
British Empire was brought from the Euphrates and planted at Twickenham. The
WWs throughout southern NSW and which ‘adorn the banks of ... the Molonglo
river at Canberra, ACT’ were introduced in the 1820s by an early settler
who ‘obtained some twigs which he saw growing beside Napoleon’s
grave on St Helena’.
