Many thanks to all responders.  It seems the roads are satisfactory and that Bowra (near Cunnamulla) is brilliant.  Thus a day has been added to the itinerary!

In July we have to be in Brisbane late in the month and in Adelaide somewhat earlier.  The most interesting route between the two appears to be via Broken Hill - Bourke - Cunnunulla - St George.  Are there any particularly good birding spots along this route and does anyone know - given no downpours - what the road from Willcania to Bourke is like (we'll be driving a Subaru Forester)?
