Phalaris grass and finches

Hi everyone,

I saw some Double-barred finches in the long grass at Palmerville Heritage Park, Giralang today, and I was told that some of the grass is an invasive weed called Phalaris.  Can anyone tell me the full species name of this weed (is it "minor"?) and is it a staple food resource for small seed-eating birds, like finches?  I am concerned that the removal of this weed from wetland sites could be a double-edged sword for animals that have become reliant on it.

Cheers,
Beth.
