The pale underparts and strong head markings threw me off, but these vary from individual to individual I guess:

Martin, I agree, the head pattern is very similar to all my references, including HANZAB, and in particular Pizzey and Knight. My Dec 1989 CBN article which I'll be drawing upon and expanding also notes that the Brown Quail has white lines on the head, the difference is that these are much fainter than in the Stubble.
It does illustrate how difficult these species can be to identify even from a photo. Having looked at Dimitri's more closely and widely I now have no doubts that it's a Brown Quail.
