Hi Paul!On your description it's highly likely that it was the call of the Koel, I hear them everyday down on the coast, these calls start at the finish of the "Kooooeeel "calling period. The female gives a loud high pitched call, like a "Rubber Ducky" toy amplified, and the male gives the "wirra wirra wirra" call in reply. The female also gives a high pitched growl when being harrassed, these calls, along with a couple of others from the male, can come at any time of the day or night so I'd be putting my money on the Koel making the sounds.
