In addition to Geoffrey's celebrity 'heard-birds' on Aussie media, I would add the Whistling Kite whose distinctive call is often heard.  A recent movie, Rabbit Proof Fence, shot in WA, opens with good views and audio of this species. No doubt, on reflection, others would also be added to this list.

As an aside, during yesterday's TV coverage the camera locked onto a Dusky Moorhen. When asked what that bird was, Jack Newton, who apparently had some history identifying birds on golf courses, proclaimed "It's a mallard ... I think".
