Hi all,
Had an almost perfect day at the wetlands after school (from 4.30-7.15).
-Two Lewin's Rail were seen in quick succession (very brief views) in much
the same place as previously (SE end/corridor).
-An Aust. Spotted Crake was much more obling until it was chased away by a
Swamphen.
-A Peregrine Falcon swooped low over the wetlands, disturbing the ducks,
staying a little until it disapeared
-Great views of one of the 3 Glossy Ibis
-2 Freckled Ducks, one seemingly paler
-the Bar-tailed Godwit seen at 4.30-5, but then probably left
-a couple of Pink-eared Ducks (good to see them again!)
-a juvenile/breeding plumage Sharp-tailed Sandpiper
-a Nankeen Night Heron
-the light morph Little Eagle
-a male Satin Flycatcher (very good views)
-a Little Grassbird
-a Great Egret
There was quite a bit of breeding activity around the wetlands, including:
-copulating Pacific Black Ducks and Superb Fairy-wrens
-a pair of Swamphens with 3 fluffy, black young
-a Pacific Balck Duck with 7 ducklings, as well as a pair of Chestnut Teal
with 9 largish ducklings
-an Australian Grebe on its nest
-a Pied Currawong consuming a nestling (couldn't tell which), and then
bringing the remains to its nest and young
Also ran into Leo Berzins. Its great to put the name to a face!
Cheers,
Tobias
