Fair point Ian, although I didn't know that. My
only ever visit to Adelaide was in 1968 and I don't think I knew what a Crested
Pigeon was then. If only there was a GBS Report from each of our capital cities,
so that we could make comparisons like that, based on proper data.
I was basing my optimism on optimism. I hope that
is not too bad a character trait. Although it is a bit more than that. The
Crested Pigeon has shown a huge and rapid increase in abundance from
a rare visitor in the late 1980s to among the most numerous species now.
The STD was "first recorded in Year 3" according to the GBS Report, although
that may have been just an isolated escaped bird, even so, that is before the CP
was here. It has shown an increase that is modest by comparison, at least
so far. Although of course past patterns may easily change and we should
take some action to reduce this species. I'm sure they would compete for food,
if not wild food, then seed put out by people for the purpose of feeding
birds.
