"Point Hut Pond (Gordon Pond) 52 coots, 4 moorhens, 5 swamps hens- I
mention this because the ABR doesn't list this site for Swamphens, that
I noticed. "
Benj - re your comment above about Pt Hutt Pond not making it into the ABR.
That may be because no one was surveying/recording from it in the past (it
isn't a Waterbird Survey site) - or it may be that there weren't very many
records from there or noteworthy numbers of "rails, crakes, swamphen,
moorhen, coot" for the 2005/06 ABR (the latest one issued).
I live only about 1.5 kms from the Pond and in late January this year I
started doing surveys of it, with the intention of carrying out a count of
everything I saw during a circumnavigation of the Pond every 3 months
approximately. I did a second survey in May and will be doing another one
next week. I mostly do this for my own interest but I have been putting the
results onto the COG Atlas database, so maybe some of these might make it to
the 2006/07 ABR. Of course, other people may also be submitting records from
the site too and if so, their counts may be more exciting than mine and end
up in the next ABR.
There were one or two Darters at the Pond during my earlier surveys but I
haven't noticed any there since June. Same with the Little Pied Cormorants
that were pretty much constantly present in the earlier months of this year.
Of the waterbirds you mention, the highest numbers I have recorded so far
are 70 Coots, 13 Moorhens and 28 Swamphens.
