I saw one in October last year, so it's not impossible:

  While on a morning walk along "Ben's Walk" in Nowra, NSW, a
  Black Bittern (probably male), was seen flying downstream along
  the Upper Nowra Creek.  The location was approximately 34°52'36"S
  150°35'19"E (based on Google Earth maps.)  According to Pizzey &
  Knight, this species is rare south of Sydney.
