I don't know that we really know the answers to
those questions. Birds seem able to shut off part of the brain and continue with
other parts. It may also be more than one bird.
As for the owl: if it sounds like a boo book it
probably is. They are the most common owl in Canberra by far (most of the time).
It is the smallest of the local owls. (Some overlap in size with Barn
Owl.)
