I went to the ANBG today and did not see the Powerful owl. I did see the Ranger who mentioned that Twitchers had been walking on the garden beds. They have now put tapes around the site.

As far as I can work out Powerful Owls are not Declared threatened in the ACT. In NSW they are listed as Vulnerable, see below:

Powerful owl - vulnerable species listing

The powerful owl (Ninox strenua) is listed as VULNERABLE on the schedules of the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act. The species was listed because:

  • Its distribution has been reduced
  • Its population is suspected to be reduced
  • It faces moderate threatening processes
  • It is an ecological specialist (it depends on particular types of diet or habitat)
  • It has poor recovery potential

The above reasons are a summary of why the species was listed as vulnerable.

An interesting profile of the Powerful owl as a threatened species is also available at

http://www.threatenedspecies.environment.nsw.gov.au/tsprofile/profile.aspx?id=10562
