I went to the ANBG today and did
not see the Powerful owl. I did see the Ranger
who mentioned that Twitchers had been walking on the garden beds. They have now
put tapes around the site.
As far as I can work out
Powerful Owls are not Declared threatened in
the ACT. In NSW they are listed as Vulnerable, see below:
http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/npws.nsf/Content/Powerful+owl+vulnerable+species+listing
Fact sheet on website of ‘Dept of Environment and Climate Change, NSW’
Powerful owl - vulnerable species
listing
The powerful owl (Ninox strenua) is listed as VULNERABLE
on the schedules of the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act. The species was
listed because:
- Its
distribution has been reduced
- Its
population is suspected to be reduced
- It
faces moderate threatening processes
- It
is an ecological specialist (it depends on particular types of diet or
habitat)
- It
has poor recovery potential
The above reasons are a summary
of why the species was listed as vulnerable.
An interesting profile of the Powerful owl as a
threatened species is also available at
