I would think that in this case, "the company ‘it’ keeps", is a furphy and it is a Grey Teal with a young or eclipse male Chestnut Teal. Were they doing anything to imply that they are part of a regular intermingling gene pool or were they just being near together?

A pair of Chestnut Teal enjoying quiet conditions at FSP yesterday.   I confess I cannot confidently separate the females from Grey Teal and infer the species from the company ‘it’ keeps as the suggested differences seem  little use in practice.  Inset is the head of a nearby (assumed) Grey Teal.  I wonder what the counters do?
