Our count was late morning, don't know how
much effect timing has on counts, but there could also be variation with birds
to-ing and fro-ing from other nearby water bodies. I think Michael is
correct about approaching closely enough to flush everything out. I've also
noticed that having a Little Eagle or other scary raptor go over tends to
increase the count for some species, as previously hidden birds come out into
the open in response to the general alarm.
