I wonder what time of day you did your counts? 

 

I counted the ponds a couple of times in March and got lower numbers than either of you and wonder if time of day was an issue rather than change of flock size (or - schlock, horror  - observer error by me).  My outcomes were

14 March (9:45 - 11:15)  Aust'n 45 ...Hoary head 60

28 March (13:45- 15:00) Aust'n 46 ...Hoary head 56
