At the RSPCA we often receive lost birds that have escaped from av iaries, the most common being cockatiels and budgies, but also pigeons and doves and others.  It is very difficult to locate the owners because often the bands are put on by the breeders of the birds and they keep poor records of to whom they sell their birds.  Occasionally we can find the owners.  for instance, recently we had a blue-fronted amazon, worth heaps ($3000+) and it was microchipped.

Pigeon fanciers are not interested in taking back their homing/lost/whatever pigeons becaue of the risk of disease.  What do we do with them?  - put them up for sale and sometimes they find a home.

The RSPCA has a data base which can be viewed  online for lost and found birds that are reported to us.

The RSPCA Wildlife website has pictures and details of aviary/owned birds that have been handed to us.  We advertise these for 14 days and then put them up for sale.  Very few are returned to owners.  Check it out if you feel inclined   www.rspcawildlife.org.au/lostbirds.html

cheers,
