The mystery bird in the photo has been identified by a number of experts as a juvenile hooded robin. Since it was sitting dead still and squawking, in the same general area as a pair of adults of that ilk, I'll record it as a DY.
I have no idea why it so seemed to have so mesmerised the silvereye sitting about 20cm away responding to the squawks!
