Sandra, your observation of a (or should I say 'the') light morph Little
Eagle, because it is pretty regular at FSP, prompts me to post a photo that
I took there on Saturday, 12 Aug. I took many photos of the bird - none
that great due to the limitations of my little digital camera - but the
attached one (a 'blow-up' of part of one) is interesting because of a bird
to the left that I inadvertently caught on camera. It looks a bit like a
Peregrine to me - happy for others to dispute this - it is a very poor
photo, and I didn't see the bird at the time, being too focussed on the
eagle!

Regarding your possible Jacky Winter at the Jerra wetlands, this would be a
pretty unlikely locality, although I don't discount anything. Jacky Winters
are basically birds of yellow box/Blakely's red gum woodland - I've also
attached a photo of one that I also took on Saturday at the Newline Quarry
site. Did you discount an immature Golden Whistler? Reason I ask is that I
saw one at the FSP last week - they are equally drab little birds, but
exhibit some rufous colouration on the wings, have a less fine bill, and
behave rather differently, being more arboreal - Jacky Winters tend to sit
on low perches and drop to the ground to pick up insects, etc.

Regards
Frank

Subject: FSP little eagle

light little eagle at FSP yesterday morning sitting in the trees near the
cattle paddock at far end. After a while it disappeared down into the
paddock, then reappeared a few minutes later very wet - flew up into same
tree and sat there for quite some time preening - obviously going through
its morning beauty routine - a little chilly at around 9.00! A black
shouldered kite at the wetlands, again, just sitting soaking up the sun for
a long period.

at both locations saw red-browed finches and yellow-rumped thornbills. at
the wetlands also saw 2 European goldfinches, white browed scrub wrens,
white plumed honeyeaters, New Holland honeyeaters and I think a jacky winter
(not a bird I've encountered before, being new to birdwatching). Unusually,
no darters or little pied cormorants, which I've seen on all previous
visits, perhaps because there were some canoeists paddling around.
