Marnix’s characterization of the
Freckled Duck seems at odds with the (was it the last major?) influx at
FSP. This is recorded in the 02/03 ABR in CBN 28:4. 22 were recorded
on January 3. They were there for at least a couple of weeks, mostly young
birds as I recall, non-breeding anyway. In the same month 37 were
reported at the ‘Readymix Wetlands’ to the south of Lake George. ‘Irregular Visitor’ might
be more appropriate for this wanderer, the visits being influenced by rainfall
across its range.
Anyway great work, Marnix. Your counts will
be most valuable and are an example to us all.
