Greetings all: Recently on the line, there has
been a couple of reports of Little Eagle, one at Mulligan's Flat, and the other
at Jerrabomberra wetlands. There has also been a report of a Little Eagle
nest in willows near the car park at the wetlands. I was out there today
and did see a nest but no birds of prey were
around.
I would be interested to hear of any more sightings
of Little Eagle anywhere in the Canberra region, as well as confirmation about
that nest at the wetlands. It has been suggested to me that this
nest may be a Swamp Harrier's, not Little Eagle.
The reason for the interest is that
I am putting together material with a view to COG
nominating the Little Eagle as a vulnerable species in the ACT, on the
basis of its decline (eg documented by Jerry Olsen in Canberra Bird notes in
December 2005).
It would be very helpful if people who see
Little Eagles, fill in a COG odd observation record and sent it to COG for our
database. Or if you email on the COG line details of the sighting with
date, time, exact location, whether its a light or dark phase bird etc
(GPS coords if you have them), I can arrange to get it in the database. If
you are not familiar with Little Eagle, Id recommend some care and checking
of field guides, as it may be confused with other birds of prey, such
as Whistling Kite.
cheers
Jenny
