The woodlands around Chiltern are well known good
bird spots and generally a good stop off between Canberra and Melbourne (which I
do usually a few times per year). If I have the time to make it a two day drive,
I usually spend the night at Chiltern to give me several hours birding there.
The "Chiltern Park Rest Stop on the Hume Highway (heading south in Victoria)" is
usually exceeded in birding by the honeyeater picnic ground (arrived at by
turning left from the Hume Highway heading south towards the road to Rutherglen,
- Chiltern being on the right - then immediately left again on the dirt road
heading back north for about 5 to 10 km). Also this is a good spot to
see Turquoise Parrots. Also the woodland around the town of Chiltern is
very good.
