Years ago (1970s) when I participated in the Westernport Bay surveys and did a lot of other sources of wader watching around Melbourne (and then many more near Brisbane), I got familiar with the Common Sandpiper, basically because they were easy to find. I usually found the one bird in very specific locations. Others would know more about it than I but I think they show very high site fidelity. I suppose most waders in flocks do, but for a species that is mostly solitary here, it is a notable feature.
