On Tuesday 17 January whilst following up on a fish kill at the Giralang wetlands (downstream side of where Ginninderra Ck passess under William Slim Drive), I saw two small downy chicks with orange-red heads being looked after by a pair of adult Eurasian Coots. The birds were in and around the thick fringing cumbungi at the inlet end of the wetland

I had a good view of them, from a distance of maybe 5 metres, for a period of maybe 5 minutes.

To my knowledge, coot breeding records are extremely scarce in the ACT, I can think of an old record (mid to late 1980s?) from Goldenholme pond near Jerrabomberra wetlands, but can't immediately recall any others. I certainly haven't seen any other chicks in my time raoming the streams and wetlands of the ACT

Does anybody know of other ACT or Canberra region records?

Cheers
