Barbara Allan and I revisted the oval about 8pm yesterday and it appeared that
the Superbs were roosting there for the night.
Then this morning about 8, I went again to see if I could count juveniles as
well as M and F. Unfortunately the birds were extremely flighty, perhaps due
to a female Koel and/or a couple of very pesky cockies which swooped the
Superbs when they settled on the ground. Alistair Smith and I estimated about
20% males, and when finally a group of about 40 settled (after Alistair left),
I counted approx 50% female, 30% juvenile. There appeared to be at least
another 40 birds in the trees all around the oval.
There was also a great ruckus when about 20 Mynas, 4 Magpie-larks and 2 Magpies
mobbed the Koel.
Barbara - this is the 3rd different Koel in Macquarie - a male, a sub-adult
male (I think - is dark but has some irregular brown patches on its front) and
this morning's female.

Wow, I wish I was back at our house in Bennelong Crescent! My neighbour says
they are visiting our pond, although he didn't know what they were (thought
they might be juvenile rosellas) until I forwarded him Geoffrey's 'Greetings
from Belconnen' postcard! I'll be back from my NZ sojourn in early March...but
they'll probably have moved on by then!
Regards
Frank
