If one did gain that impression they would have failed to take account of
the fact that reports on this chatline are heavily biased in favour of
suburban and home-based observations, and that, as Philip has astutely
pointed out, and by reason of its food preferences, the Koel, unlike other
cuckoos, tends to be a bird of the suburbs. If you want a report on trends
in the broader countryside, Martin, you will need another source. However,
not wishing to be unresponsive to your question, and speaking as an average
kind of stroller through the woodlands, I would say that, cuckoo-wise, this
is a pretty average kind of year. To expand on my impressions regarding all
the other migrants would strain the patience of most subscribers to this
chatline, and justifiably irritate those who want only numbers and baselines
and for whom impressions are but dreams and shadows.
