I'm not sure what you mean by "Most native plantings create monocultures", 
Alex.  Wherever I've lived (at various addresses in Sydney, Canberra and, 
currently, Wellington NZ), I've spent much time and money converting my 
backyard from exotic to native plants.  I'm not a total purist, and have 
certainly retained (even planted) some exotics of a non-invasive variety, and 
have also planted (in Australia, not NZ!) a few Western Australian species 
which, I guess, are as exotic as anything from overseas.  I guess you must be 
referring to large scale plantations of one native species, such as a eucalypt 
species or a Melaleuca, for commercial production, but surely even that is 
better than a large plantation of something like Pinus radiata?  Perhaps I'm 
misunderstanding something here?
