As with many of these types of events, it is hard
to know (actually I suspect we don't know) whether these birds are "stragglers"
that spent the summer here and have stayed, or whether they are migrants who are
still heading north quite late, from areas far south of Canberra (which is what
I strongly suspect) or even migrants who are heading south very early, from
further north.
Certainly the COG Atlas and GBS Report both
quantitatively document the species to have minimal reporting rate and abundance
(respectively) here in winter, but maybe with global warming, this is
changing.
