Published sightings for the week ending 22 Jan 2012.

Sun 22 Jan Eastern Great Egret and Nankeen Night-Heron. Fulton Reserve, Blackburn South.
One Eastern Great Egret feeding and one juvenile Nankeen Night-Heron perched in the middle of a pond were the highlights of tonight's walk. First time that I've seen the Egret at this location. Other species noted were the usual suspects such as Dusky Moorhen (pair with young), Purple Swamphen (approx 10, various ages), Chestnut Teal (pair with young), Pacific Black Duck (adults plus young) and a pair of very tame Masked Lapwing.

A single Painted Honeyeater, a couple of Speckled Warbler and a Red-capped Robin near the picnic ground.

Diamond Dove, Diamond Firetail, Budgerigar Leaghur State Park
Several (about 5) Diamond Dove, A few Diamond Firetail, a couple of Budgerigar, lots of White-browed Woodswallow, a few Rufous Songlark and many other assorted honeyeaters drinking from small dam near the picnic ground.

Sat 21 Jan Intermediate Egret, Australian Spotted Crake, Baillon's Crake, Blue-winged Parrot. Glossy Ibis Hospital Swamp, Baencshs Lane
At least one Intermediate Egret (photo with Great Egret by Craig). Total of 42 Eastern Great Egrets in vicinity, Intermediate Egret generally keeping to itself. Also 12 Spotted Crakes and 1 Baillon's Crake.16 Glossy Ibis. Part of Birdlife Australia's Summer Shorebird Survey. Pleased to report Blue-winged Parrots in more open "non-breeding habitat" after records from Otways... at least 8 incl 1 M 1 F and 2 juv.

White-throated Nightjar, White-throated Needletail, Eastern Pygmy Possum Bunyip State Park
Birds seen on dusk at the Helipad. A major surprise and seriously cool event was when we saw an Eastern Pygmy Possum cross the track near the edge of the park in heathy stringybark woodland along Tynong Nth Rd. It sat by the side of the track, allowing me to pick it up and quickly develop a taste for human flesh. That's one long incisor...

Australian Spotted Crake, Red-kneed Dotterel, Crested Shrike-tit Serendip Sanctuary, Lara
Australian Spotted Crake (2) A new bird for this site. One seen in Wetland Aviary (it apparently followed Ruth in!) and one seen on lake edge at road causeway near Farm Dam. Red-kneed Dotterel (2) Marshland - not often seen at this site. Crested Shrike-tit (3) Outside kangaroo enclosure, including one immature being fed by parents.

Latham's Snipe Little Lake Boort
Two Latham's Snipe seen this morning on mudflats at Myrnong Beach. One dropped down behind some vegetation, the other froze giving excellent view. Both dashed for cover a minute or so later. First report of this species since 2009.

Was surprised to see this bird in such an urban area - spotted it flying low towards me as I was driving - it was even on the correct side of the road!

Pacific Golden Plover, Black-tailled Godwit, Red Knot, etc. Western Treatment Plant, Werribee.
Observed six Pacific Golden Plover amongst rocks on falling tide at Kirk Point, Black-tailed Godwit in Conservation Pond 85WC - 9. Eight Red Knot on shoreline point north-east of Beach Road gate, at same location eleven Bar-tailed Godwit (one with orange band on right leg). Adult and juvenile Spotted Harrier observed north-west of Paradise Road and Grills Road. Thousands of Australian Shelducks and Pink-eared Ducks at the Plant at present.

At 11AM 800+ Australian Pelicans riding the thermals above the Village Glen. I have never before seen such a large flock in this area.

Red-chested Button-quail Beattys Road, Plumpton
One bird seen well feeding roadside, when approached 2 birds flew into long grass, bird that was clearly seen looked to be a female. Also 2 Brown Quail flushed close by. Site is 200mts west of Kororoit Creek, looks to be old farm site. Other birds seen along Beattys Rd. 13 Aust. Spotted Crake at flooded area besides Bridge, several juveniles, female White-winged Triller, Rufous Songlark, several Purple-crowned Lorikeets and Horsfield's Bushlark. Also seen were large numbers of Zebra Finches Est. 80/90 birds, many Juveniles. Plenty of birds and rubbish unfortunatley.

About 500 metres south of Pakenham Treatment Plant one Brown Songlark was seen on farm fence post.

Eastern Koel, Male Mount Eliza, Kunyung Road
A single male feeds in a Morton Bay fig tree almost at the roundabout junction of Kunyung Road and Acheron Avenue and flies to a large pine tree nearby where it calls. Been heard calling the last 2 nights and days. Seen this evening.

Diamond Dove Muckleford Train Station (Castlemaine)
Single bird feeding on the platform. When approached it flew up onto a cyclone fence topped with barb wire surrounding a grassy compound. I could approach the bird to within 10 metres and then it would fly to the fence on the other side of the compound. Bird observed for 1/2hr and it was still there when I left.

Spotless Crake Drainage line into Mordialloc Creek
Spotless Crake with 3 chicks . Watched them for 10 minutes along with the Great Egret . These birds have been here for months, but now they have chicks. Great viewing .

On Wild Dog Creek Rd within ~3km of Gt Ocean Rd. Total of 8 birds in two flocks of 4 flushed from roadside, within 500m, presumably feeding on seeding plants by track. Interesting to add this record to other recent sightings of this species in the Otways...

Cape Otway Rd 3.5 km W of Winchelsea/Deans Marsh Rd. An immature bird patrolling over dried 'fodder' crop, on N side of road, which drifted off into the distance after initial sighting.

Brush Cuckoos at Mortimers & Nash Creek camp area. White-throated Nightjar (3) at Helipad flying around our heads and feeding off ground at dusk. Rose Robin males at Mortimers and Treefern Track. Beautiful Firetail (5) at Nash Creek camp area.

Following up from Jennifer Dean's report. There are at least 2 Dollarbirds with a possible juvenile which we did not see. They are on private property in huge old Red Gums by the creek.

Port Lincoln Ringneck Parrrot, single bird. Pretty sure this is an uncommon observation within the Bendigo region. (Moderators note: would be an escapee).
