Sun 29 Jan Long-toed Stint and Wood Sandpiper Western Treatment Plant, Werribee
I sighted a Long-toed Stint at 1.30pm at Pond 35E-8 (Eastern Conservation Ponds). Also present was one Wood Sandpiper, presumably the bird which was reported quite some time ago and found again by Bob Swindley last week. Both birds were in the south-westerly corner of the Conservation Pond.

Last seen at this location 14 November 1987. Calling throughout the day and occasional clear view of male bird.

Lewin's Rail, Freckled Duck, Banded Lapwing, Banded Stilt Western Treatment Plant, Werribee
Just a couple of hours early morning. Lewin's Rail calling near hide. Also many Spotted Crake and a few Buff-banded Rail same spot. Single Pacific Golden Plover and several Common Tern at Kirk Pt. A couple of Freckled Duck on Lake Borrie South. Several Banded Lapwing, Beach Road. Single White-winged Black Tern, Lake Borrie near boat ramp. 3 Cape Barren Geese and several Banded Stilt, Paradise Road. Waders - mainly Sharpies, Red-necked Stints, Curlew Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper.

Pied Butcherbird Raywood
This is the second time I have posted a picture of a Pied Butcher bird seen between Raywood and Dingee and I have seen more on 3 or 4 other occasions. This one was on the Raywood Dingee Rd about 1/2km out of Raywood. I am of a thought they are becoming established this far south in this area.

Great Crested Grebe (200+) At least 200 near shore from north end of dam wall around below picnic area. Many more elsewhere on lake ... astonishing! A couple of chicks but the rest adults.

Sat 28 Jan Sooty Owl, Powerful Owl, Striated Heron Mallacoota and Gypsy Point
Two Sooty Owls seen near the Shipwreck Creek camping area making the cricket call. Plenty of Yellow-bellied Gliders in the same area. Two Powerful Owls seen roosting during the day at Shady Gully in Mallacoota. One holding the remains of a largish bird. A Striated Heron seen at Gipsy Point as well.

Lewin's Rail, Australian Crake, Buff-banded Rail, Common Sandpiper. Kororoit Creek, Altona Coastal Park 3018.
At approximately 1600 hours observed, one Lewin's Rail, twelve Australian Crake, eight Buff-banded Rail (including two juveniles) and one Common Sandpiper, all on the southern bank of Kororoit Creek. All of the birds were either in the Mangrove aerial roots or at the waters edge. Observations were made from the north side of the creek mouth and upstream (west) for 400 - 450 metres. Twelve plus, Common Greenshank, observed on the creek mouth tidal flats.

Baillon's Crake, Australian Spotted Crake and Spotless Crake (3) Very small over all dark Spotless Crake, answered to recording played from App. All easily seen from edge of lake, foraging on water line close to bullrushes.

Turquoise Parrot, Sooty Owl, Beautiful Firetail Bunyip State Park
Reasonably successful evening visit to the park. Turquoise Parrot - Single female flushed from side of road near Nash Creek. Sooty Owl - Small, silent dark bird showing off on Link Road. Beautiful Firetail - Loose flock of at least 30 individuals with many juveniles Bunyip River Road. Also plenty of Needletails and great views of WT Nightjars at the Helipad.

Brown Quail Back Swamp Reserve, Kerang
Group of 23 seen together on road along the east side of the Loddon around 7am. More heard in the lignum in the area.

Red-browed Treecreeper, Pilotbird, Rufous Fantail Sherbrooke Picnic Ground, Dandenong Ranges
Red-browed Treecreeper (3) Seen fairly low down in trees close to Wattle Track. Pilotbird sandlandi (3) One heard, then seen calling from bush nearby, good views on ground as well within 3 to 4 m. Saw two birds on path just a bit further on, with good extended views in the open. Rufous Fantail (3) displaying nicely.

Fri 27 Jan Llittle Lorikeets , Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoo Trin Warren Tam-boore wetlands, Royal Park
I had very close encounters with what I assume was a juvenile Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo. Also a small group of Little Lorikeets feeding in the tall eucalypts behind the bird hide.

Pacific Golden Plover, Sacred Kingfisher Western Treatment Plant, Werribee
Approx 8 PGP on rocks at Kirk Pt. Sacred Kingfisher on wires on Pt Wilson Rd on the way home. Good numbers of Banded Lapwing still on Beach Rd. Lost count of the number of Spotted Crakes (maybe 30+) and good numbers of Buff-banded Rails and Banded Stilts. Many ponds quite dry, including the T-Section Pond 4 where all the Baillon's have been, although there was a brief glimpse of a probable Spotless Crake in the reeds there.

Great, Intermediate and Little Egret Victoria Lagoon, Hollands Landing Road (Old Onga Pump Sign)
Despite a very strong easterly blowing and shaking the scope, an impressive flock of 37 Great, 13 Intermediate and three Little Egrets sitting on sand bank in water amongst Pelicans was observed. Most of the Great Egrets observed intermittently neck stretching; pointing bill directly to the sky with some snapping at nearby neighbour (pre breeding behaviour) ? Two White faced Herons foraging amongst flock to assist in determining correct sp. of Egret.

At least 30 Spotted Crakes on the remaining (and fast-evaporating) pools at the Laverton Creek end of the swamp.

Thu 26 Jan Barking Owl, White-throated Nightjar Chiltern, Honeyeater picnic ground
Barking Owl called for a few minutes at dusk. Hot evening birds quiet. Also saw Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters, Fuscous Honeyeaters, juvenile Red-capped Robins.

Blue Bonnet Nardoo Flower Farm, Yarrawalla, west of Pyramid Hill
Blue Bonnet 1 passed though calling mid afternoon. First record for the site over 18 years. My most south-easterly record. This species has increased in the Kerang/Boort region over the last few years. Historically they still occurred as far south as Calivil until the 1950's. Maybe they'll make it back across the northern plains one day?

Wed 25 Jan Little Lorikeet Lake Rd, Connewarre
At least 2 Little Lorikeets seen and heard in small stand of Eucalypts in flower just E of Baenschs Lane along Lake Rd. Always good to find this uncommon species around Geelong. Also Musk, Purple-crowned Lorikeets with White-plumed & New Holland Honeyeaters and Red Wattlebirds in trees.

Intermediate Egret, Little Egret, Baillon's Crake, Spotless Crake Hospital Swamp, Baenschs Lane
The Intermediate Egret remains at this site ... keeping to itself, 40+ Eastern Great Egrets (many feasting on elvers) also a little Egret! Good numbers of Australian Spotted Crake, at least 2 Baillon's Crake and a Spotless Crake( hd and seen). Also a male Australasian Darter and many Royal Spoonbills.

Black-tailed Godwit (1) Bird seen on Spectacle Lake , clear views and photo's . White belly , White underwing , White rump with Black Tail and White wing Bars. Very easily spooked , staying close to Black Winged Stilts

A Southern Boobook has been calling at the back of my house for approx 15 minutes. Also heard approx 3 months ago, but in the 14 years I've lived here, it's the only times I've heard one.

Sun 22 Jan Eastern Reef Egret ( grey morph ) Cape Conran
An Eastern Reef Egret was observed along the rocky shoreline at Cape Conran ( west ) this afternoon. It adds to a number of reports over recent years during the summer months within the Cape Conran Coastal Park.

Single bird in open view on surface vegetation on the lake between the 3rd and 16th fairways. (Previous interesting sightings on this ornamental lake have included Australian Spotted Crake and Latham's Snipe.)

Brush Cuckoo Great Otway National Park (Maits Rest)
Brush Cuckoo (1) heard in two locations separated by about 15 minutes, possibly same bird which had moved. Call clear and strong - I checked it against recording on my phone just to be sure.

Wed 18 Jan Square-tailed Kite Haws Road, Barkers Creek
One (missing a couple of tail-feathers) seen and photographed flying low over the canopy of pines and nearby eucalypts on the western edge of the Moonlight Flat pine plantation; second time seen in this area in recent years.

Seen a lone Musk duck, four Red-kneed Dotterels, six Black-fronted Dotterels, Lathams Snipe, Sharp-tailed Sandpipers and heaps more water birds. Also seen a bird which I think is a Little Egret cross White-faced Heron.
