Date: Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Location: Altona Landcare Reserve

Brown Quail (Coturnix ypsilophora) (2)

Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx basalis) (6)

Crested Shrike-tit (Falcunculus frontatus) (2)

Diamond Firetail (Stagonopleura guttata) (2)

Altona is proving a magnet for different species of Quail at the moment! After
getting excellent views of a pair of Painted Button-Quails a few weeks ago,
today it was a pair of Brown Quail! These two were calling in some low,
regenerating (after fire) growth. Imitating their call, both birds approached
to about 2m away but stuck fairly close to cover. Good views were obtained but
poor photographs, as they are pretty quick! Horsfields Bronze-Cuckoo's are also
here in force at the moment, with 6 different birds either seen or heard
throughout the reserve. Crested Shrike-tits were in their usual area in middle
of reserve and a pair of Diamond Firetails near the entrance.
