Hi Peter,
Yes it does have the capability for an external microphone - hence the question :)

I agree with Andrew, recordings are rarely mentioned for id puposes, let alone offered.

Lots of compact cameras do video too, and audio notes, and have done for a long time. But do they allow for an external microphone? Mine doesn't, does your SLR, David?

Lots of phones can record audio these days too, and ought to be able to take an external microphone. Has anyone tried this?

Following on from that thought, I have just bought a new DSLR
that records video. I think the idea of being able to record
sounds/calls as well would be great as per Andrew's comments.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable microphone?
Requirements would be:
1. Fairly small/lightweight
2. Not too expensive, but still making it a worthwhile
quality jump over the inbuilt microphone.

Thanks!

Unfortunately not many birders go out with a Nagra in their back
pocket.

More is the pity. Its great when links to digital pics are
posted and we get commentary from people like Mike Carter.
It'd be good to get the samefor calls.

And these days you can get something much better than the
classic reel-to-reel Nagra for several hundred dollars, and
it will fit in your back pocket, e.g:
