I'd say criteria for non-birders are: big, colorful, unique and easy to spot: e.g. Emu, Southern Cassowary, megapodes, Little Penguin, possibly albatrosses, parrots, kingfishers/kookaburras, frogmouths, lyrebirds, bowerbirds, riflebirds, finches

I agree. My non-birding sister asked to see two birds during our recent trip to Australia - a cassowary and penguins. (We saw lots of penguins. No cassowary though.) She also admitted that the lyrebirds and the stork were interesting. I'm sure she would have preferred to ignore most of the birds I kept stopping to look at though.
