Hi Laurie,

I think that learning about birds is hard enough for novices without them 
having to deal with a multitude of common names to confuse them.  What old 
hands call a bird in the field is their business but in any communication it 
is most desirable to use accepted common names.  After all that is why the 
list of 'official' common names has been produced.
For the record 'An Australian Bird Book' by Leach (1912) calls it 'Southern 
Stone-Curlew (-Plover)' and lists two additional common names ' Willaroo' 
and 'Scrub Curlew'.
My 1946 edition of Cayley's 'What Bird is That'  calls it simply 
'Stone-curlew' but lists the following common names 'Stone-plover, Curlew, 
Thick-knee, Scrub Curlew, and Willaroo'.
While I believe that one accepted common name should be used it is important 
to record all of the alternative common names for historical purposes.
