There are several pairs in the grounds of the University of Queensland campus
at St Lucia, Brisbane. I approached two birds within a few metres the other
morning adjacent to a busy car park, and they are calling quite regularly at
dusk at the moment. For a European used to thick-knees being rare birds with
specialist habitat requirements, it is great to see them in urban green spaces!

Subject: Urban Bush Thickknees
I was pleased to see a trio of Bush Thickknees at Spring Hill Corner
[overlooking the Roma St railway station, SEQ] at lunchtime
yesterday. While there has been a pair that put on periodic
appearances in the Albert St parklands, I rarely find them. There was
a nesting Thickknee in the RS Gardens, so perhaps the third bird is
the resulting offspring.
I was even more pleased to hear a Bush Thickknee calling in the early
hours of this morning - it's the first one I've heard calling in
Brisbane and the first one I've come across in my part of town.
