Done to death, yes, but all anecdotally. I doubt anyone has ever
performed any proper subjective tests of binocular robustness.  Perhaps
someone could volunteer to buy up a heap of binoculars and perform these
tests, report the results to us and then give all the buggered
binoculars to a scheme such as has been proposed.
